Peter Belliss Tribute Tournament
In 2019 the Aramoho Bowling Club is staging a tournament to recognise the contribution that Peter Belliss has made over his 50 years of bowling to the Aramoho Bowling Club, Wanganui Bowls, New Zealand Bowls and World Bowls.
This event which is sponsored by Ryman Healthcare and St Johns Club Wanganui will be held over the Easter weekend of 2019 and is open to any full member of a Bowling club which is affiliated to Bowls NZ or World Bowls.
The format is 2 bowl triples, with the teams being either all Male, all Female or Mixed. Teams can be composite, meaning that team members do not have to belong to the same club.
Peter started bowling as an 18-year-old at the Aramoho Bowling Club where his parents were founding members of the club that backed onto his family home. Peter showed his potential in his first year of bowling, winning both the Club Junior Singles and Junior Pairs competitions. This was to be the forerunner of many Club, Centre and World titles.
Peter won the first ever two professional tournaments held in New Zealand, however he had to turn the prize money down so as to be eligible for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Peter turned professional in that same year and in 1988 was awarded the MBE for services to bowls. In 2008 he was inducted into the Wanganui Sports Hall of Fame and in 2013 was one of the inaugural inductees into Bowls NZ Hall of Fame.
Peter has represented Wanganui, Queensland and New South Wales as well as representing New Zealand in five World Championships and four Commonwealth Games but also missed playing in another two Commonwealth Games, once because he was a professional and the other because he had played in South Africa. Peter has also won International tournaments in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
But for the fact that Peter went to Australia for employment opportunities in 1996 for 16 years, his record in New Zealand at all levels would certainly have been greater.
Peter is currently the Head Coach and one of three Selectors for the NZ Blackjacks.
Peter holds Life Membership with the Aramoho Bowling Club, Bowls Wanganui and Bowls New Zealand.
